The Kerala diaspora in the UAE has always supported and offered a helping hand to the homeland and their contribution towards social and economic development of Kerala has been immense. Over the years, there has been a significant enhancement in the engagement levels between Government of Kerala and the diaspora of non-resident Keralites to the advantage of everyone.
The high literacy rate in Kerala, strong education background, the technical expertise and skills, puts Kerala employees at an advantage on the world map of migrants. Today a majority of Keralites working in the UAE are in highly skilled professions like doctors, nurses, engineers, IT professionals, teachers etc.
As per the Economic Survey 2018 by the State Planning Board, Kerala, for the emigrants from Kerala, GCC accounts for 89.2% of emigrants from Kerala. Among the GCC countries, UAE has been the most preferred destination with 39.1% of total Kerala emigrants, followed by Saudi Arabia with 23 percent and Oman with 8%.
The UAE businessmen of Kerala origin have also been working for the upliftment of Kerala through improving the basic infrastructure and setting up tertiary care hospitals and other business establishments. With nearly hundred thousand crores of Rupees flowing into Kerala from the expats in GCC, the economy of Kerala is hugely supported by the contribution of NRKs. We are proud that we could play a major role in improving the healthcare scenario of the state and providing employment for large number of people in the state. We have now 4 hospitals and a medical college with 2759 beds with an investment of Rs. 1930 Crores. We employ 7921 people out of which 1030 are doctors and 3872 are nurses. We distribute Rs. 480 crores as salary to the employees every year and is probably one of the largest private sector employers in the state.
There have been excellent support from the political leadership, the bureaucracy and the people of kerala for the support provided for establishing and running these institutions in the last 20 years. This highlights fact that Kerala is a very business friendly state and with the availability of large number of professionals is one among the best destinations in India for investment.
